Christianity Corrupted explores how Christian theologies in the United States have been shaped to normalize white superiority and privilege. Divided into three parts, the book first traces the theological roots of this scandal, examining the influence of Reformed notions of election, Enlightenment theories of race, and proslavery theologies embraced by colonists. The second part shows how enslaved Africans developed their own Christian practices and theologies of spiritual resistance in response to oppression. The final part considers the enduring impact of these roots, from the Civil War and Jim Crow to the Moral Majority and contemporary white evangelical complicity in politics, including the election of Donald Trump and the resurgence of white nationalism.
