The MahoganyBooks Team (L-R: Ramunda Young, Mahogany Young, & Derrick Young)

Our Vision

MahoganyBooks is a local independent bookstore that believes in social entreprenuership. We take a leadership role in the African American community by promoting reading, writing, and cultural awareness as tools to improve self-esteem, self-love and ultimately our communities to enrich the lives of motivated individuals.

Our Mission

MahoganyBooks is dedicated to meeting the literary needs of readers in search of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora.

Our Story

At its roots, MahoganyBooks.com  was an online bookstore for 10 years that specialized in books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora. As of Black Friday (November 24, 2017), the doors of their very first physical location were opened in the Ward 8 Anacostia community of Washington, DC.  Created online in 2007 by an enterprising husband and wife duo in the Washington DC area, MahoganyBooks is the result of Derrick and Ramunda's love for culture, community and literature and their desire to see it empower others as it has empowered them. With over 20 years of combined experience in the retail book industry, they have witnessed the book industry's highs and lows. That practical knowledge has given them the insight needed to develop a new bookstore model that capitalizes on today's technology while staying true to the independent community bookstore roots that define the core values of MahoganyBooks and its founders.

Since its inception, MahoganyBooks has grown from being exclusively an online bookstore to being the go-to bookseller for community book events featuring African American authors in communities ranging from Manassas, VA to Washington DC and Baltimore, MD, reaching as far north as Philadelphia, PA and Atlantic City, NJ. In 2014, MahoganyBooks was recognized by emPower Magazine as one of their 2014 emPower Players for their efforts to promote literature as well as the support provided to many notable literary organizations of the Washington DC area like Go on Girl! Book Club and the Hurston Wright Foundation.  Since then they have been featured nationally in the Washington Post, Vanity Fair Magazine, NBC, ABC and other outlets highlighting their commitment of making books accessible.

However, for Derrick & Ramunda, they are most excited about the impact that their family run business has had, not only, on local children through their give-back program, Books for the Block, but also the zeal for reading and entrepreneurship their daughter Mahogany has developed through her exposure to the MahoganyBooks enterprise. This is the knowledge that keeps the MahoganyBooks team motivated to grow, innovate, and serve.

Thank you for visiting our website, we look forward to earning your business and meeting all of your literary needs.
