Sarah Raughley grew up in Southern Ontario writing stories about freakish little girls with powers because she secretly wanted to be one. She is a huge fangirl of anything from manga to sci-fi fantasy TV to Japanese role-playing games and other geeky things, all of which have largely inspired her writing. Sarah has been nominated for the Aurora Award for Best YA Novel and works in the community doing writing workshops for youths and adults. On top of being a YA writer, Sarah has a PhD in English, which makes her a doctor, so it turns out she didn't have to go to medical school after all. As an academic, Sarah has taught undergraduate courses and acted as a postdoctoral fellow. Her research concerns representations of race and gender in popular media culture, youth culture, and postcolonialism. She has written and edited articles in political, cultural, and academic publications. She continues to use her voice for good. You can find her online at SarahRaughley.com.

Review Quotes:
"Bloodily spectacular. The Bones of Ruin builds page after page of visceral intrigue, steamrolling toward the end of the world in Victorian London. These characters could tear you apart, but you will love them all the same. Sarah Raughley's world breathes true to the past and yet gleams brilliantly new."

--Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS and OUR VIOLENT ENDS

Review Quotes:
"Sarah Raughley proves once again that, like her intricate worlds and wonderful characters, she is a master of decolonization and a force to be reckoned with."--E.K. Johnston, New York Times bestselling author on THE BONES OF RUIN

Review Quotes:
"This cryptic, enticing journey is told in alternating, third-person perspectives: Adam's cold and calculating, Iris' searching and daring. The author builds a delicious tension that will have readers putting the pieces together as the end of the world nears and wanting more after they reach the climactic cliffhanger ending. A rousing series opener."--Kirkus Reviews on THE BONES OF RUIN "July 15, 2021"

Review Quotes:
"The fantastical premise supports a multilayered plot and vibrant characters. Meanwhile, themes of racial abuse, violence, and rebirth, paired with a wealth of romantic options, add further complexity to this series starter."--Publishers Weekly on THE BONES OF RUIN "September 27, 2021"

Publisher Marketing:
Penny Dreadful meets The Gilded Wolves in this captivating sequel to young adult historical fantasy The Bones of Ruin that follows immortal Iris as she desperately tries to thwart her destructive destiny.
Iris Marlow can't die. For years, she was tormented by her missing memories and desperate to learn her real identity. So when the mysterious Adam Temple offered to reveal the truth of who she was in exchange for her joining his team in the Tournament of Freaks, a gruesome magical competition, it was an offer she couldn't refuse. But the truth would have been better left buried.
Because Adam is a member of the Enlightenment Committee, an elite secret society built upon one fundamental idea: that the apocalypse known as Hiva had destroyed the world before and would do it again, and soon. But what the Committee--and Iris--never guessed is that Hiva is not an event. Hiva is a person-- Iris.
Now, no matter how hard Iris fights for a normal life, the newly awakened power inside her keeps drawing her toward the path of global annihilation. Adam, perversely obsessed with Iris, will stop at nothing to force her to unlock her true potential, while a terrifying newcomer with ties to Hiva's past is on the hunt for Iris.
All Iris wants is the freedom to choose her own future, but the cost might be everything Iris holds dear--including the world itself.

Jamal Jordan is a mixed-media documentarian and occasional professor. He's worked with VICE News, NBC News and, most recently, the New York Times (where the Queer Love in Color adventure began).

Review Quotes:
"The world needs to see and receive what love looks like in all its forms. Queer Love in Color arrested my heart and soothed my anxious soul. Love is love is love is love! Thank you, Jamal Jordan, for showing the world what true love looks like." --Billy Porter

"As queer and trans people of color, we don't often see images of ourselves in love--maybe infatuation or lust, but not often love. By capturing couples and families in our community and amplifying their love, Queer Love in Color helps define our legacies of queer affection beyond the carnal and sensational. This is a mirror into which generations might look to see their deepest selves and a world of possibilities reflected back at them. This is a tool through which many will unlearn the toxicity that society has taught us and learn anew how to love and be loved." --Tre'vell Anderson, journalist and cultural critic
"Jamal Jordan challenges the narrow depictions of queer love through this masterfully written, photographed, and curated collection. There is no one way to love, and Queer Love in Color honors and celebrates that truth." --Blair Imani, historian and author
"I wept as I pored over the images and stories here. What Jamal Jordan has captured is the magic of our love, of our bonds, of our understanding. In a world that so often renders us expendable, this project reminds us all that our love for each other is what has saved and will save us. In each other's arms we create a world of possibilities, tenderness, and empowerment. So much of the work we do is to let others know we see them, and Queer Love in Color reflects us back to ourselves with a startling and welcomed clarity--and I am unendingly grateful." --Lady Phyll, executive director and co-founder of UK Black Pride
"With Queer Love in Color, Jamal Jordan does more than reveal the infinite possibilities available beyond the status quo; like all great queer storytellers, Jordan turns the possible into the inevitable, the marginal into the central, and the faded into the bold. With portraits of and insight from queer folks of color from around the world, Jordan captures the most profound gift of queerness: We define our own realities, design our own joys, and experience loves that have no equal." --Matthew Riemer and Leighton Brown, authors of We Are Everywhere: Protest, Power, and Pride in the History of Queer Liberation

Jacket Description/Back:
What do you do when your son announces he is transgender and asks that you call her by a new name? Or what if your child uses a term you ve never heard of to describe themselves (neutrois, agender, non-binary, genderqueer, androgyne) and when you didn t know what they meant, they left the room and now won t speak to you about it? Perhaps your daughter recently asked you not to use gendered pronouns when referring to her anymore, preferring that you use they; you re left wondering if this is just a phase, or if there s something more that you need to understand about your child.
There is a generational divide in our understandings of gender. This book helps bridge that divide and provides practical information on helping your child navigate their world and build the resiliency they need to survive in often hostile situations. Raising a teenager is challenging; when the teen is transgender, or non-binary in their gender identity, the task becomes that much greater.
This comprehensive guidebook explores the unique challenges that thousands of families face every day raising a teenager who may be transgender, non-binary, gender-fluid or otherwise gender-expansive. Combining years of experience working in the field with extensive research and personal interviews, the authors cover pressing concerns relating to physical and emotional development, social and school pressures, medical considerations, and family communications. Learn how parents can more deeply understand their children, and raise their non-binary or transgender adolescent with love and compassion.
