Position Overview
A MahoganyBooks Bookseller is responsible for creating a positive, engaging shopping experience while maintaining efficient daily store operations. This role requires someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities, pays close attention to detail, and brings book knowledge, community spirit, and a love of culture to every shift. The ideal candidate will be available for opening and closing shifts on both weekdays and weekends and wants to show up for their community. They care about and value people, lead with warmth, and understand that helping someone find the right book is an act of care.
Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Greet and assist every customer; determine needs and provide personalized book and product recommendations.
- Go beyond the bestseller list — recommend debut authors, hidden book gems, and titles suited to each customer's specific interests.
- Resolve customer questions and represent the MahoganyBooks brand with warmth and professionalism.
Store Operations
- Restock shelves and merchandise displays consistently throughout each shift
- Receive inventory, replenish supplies, and remove trash.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized store environment in accordance with cleaning, sanitation, and safety standards.
- Master the POS system and process transactions accurately. This frontline responsibility directly impacts customer experience and store operations.
- Operate store equipment confidently; troubleshoot minor breakdowns as needed to keep operations smooth.
Curation & Brand Presentation
- Assist in developing shelf talkers, curated reading lists, and in-store displays.
- Ensure every display embodies the MahoganyBooks brand, highlights significant stories, and amplifies the voices of our community.
Events & Innovation
- Support author events, store activations, and special programming
- Bring ideas and solutions—proactive self-starters are encouraged.
Availability & Schedule
This is a part-time role averaging 20–28 hours per week. Shifts may be scheduled for mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. You must be available to work at least two weekends each month. Schedules may be adjusted to meet store needs, so flexibility is a must.
Physical Requirements
- Regular movement throughout the store
- Extended periods of standing at the register or on the floor
- Frequent lifting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and occasional ladder use
Minimum Qualifications
- Genuine knowledge of Black authors, titles, and genres across a wide range of subjects
- Experience with cash registers or POS systems
- Strong communication skills and the ability to connect with all kinds of people
- Proficiency with computers, data entry, and Google Docs; basic math skills
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED required
- Scheduling flexibility, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Compensation: This is a paid, hourly position.
